As an artist-educator with Graves disease and ADHD, her heart-centered and electric approach to disability advocacy bolsters these movements with invaluable currencies: powerful, dynamic art and media that all at once educates, bridges divergent worlds, and builds a future that mirrors her Autistic son’s experience. When her son was diagnosed as Autistic at age 3 she began to examine the absence of black disabled children in digital and literary media, this motivated the release of an advocacy photo zine entitled "KnoxRoxs." Dedicated to her Autistic son.&nbsp;The zine is a way to give visibility to children of color in the black Autistic community. The photozine helped to contribute to the rare framework centering autism acceptance in families of color, amplify conversations with the Disability community, igniting the continued need to develop anti-racist, and anti-ableist media.&nbsp;Jen’s creative practice shines best when she can infuse design, disability justice, photography, zine making, and art activism to center Neurodivergent mothering, caregiving, and joy as important acts of resistance in a society that so often devalues disabled communities. WorkshopOctober 8, 2025 Exhibition Statement:&nbsp;The Framework: Disabled Mothering as ResistanceMy journey as an artist is deeply intertwined with my role as a parent. It wasn't until my son was diagnosed as autistic at age three that I began to fully embrace my own neurodivergence. I recognize my art and design practice as a critical tool for redefining my role as a disabled parent raising a disabled child. This perspective informs a framework I call "Disabled Mothering as an Act of Resistance." This framework aims to empower and activate change, amplifying what happens when we center disabled parenting. It's a weapon of creative resistance that dismantles the demonization and social inaccuracies often aimed at autistic children and adults. Now more than ever, we need designs crafted by disabled artists for the disabled community. Disabled artists are the blueprint. A Personal JourneyFrom a young age, I knew I was different. While I was gleefully goofy at home and with friends, I experienced selective mutism in school due to being overwhelmed and to avoid bullying. Art became a tool and a language that didn't discriminate. It allowed me to be my authentic self and carried me through college and into motherhood. As a parent, masking my disabilities became harder, prompting me to explore how my art could be a powerful tool for community engagement and advocacy, celebrating disability joy. My advocacy journey began with a photo zine, KnoxRoxs, released in 2018, dedicated to my autistic son, and re-released in 2024, with additional photography. This project was a way to provide much-needed visibility to children of color within neurodivergent communities. I hope this exhibition is the first of many opportunities to co-curate disability-centered shows, continuing to disrupt and dismantle social stigmas. <img width="4284" height="5712" width_o="4284" 2025,&nbsp; you may have seen a dope bandana I designed for my disabled Coachella community! It was an honor to be able to celebrate disability justice culture and design at Coachella! So thankful to GV Black and Goldenvoice’s Accessible+ Program, for letting me do my thing, holding space for Collective Care, Disabled Joy, and Community! We also sold out at the merch tent! So glad the design was well received!&nbsp; Accessible Plus is a disabled-led space at Coachella that centers on amplifying the intersectionality of BIPOC people with disabilities - creating a path through hands-on experience to be a part of a new festival future. About the bandana design: My creative practice shines best when I can amplify both design justice and disability justice in my work. In a world that so often devalues Black-Disabled communities in cultural spaces, the intersection of art and culture must be synonymous with justice. This collaboration, and act of solidarity between myself and GV Black, Accessible + and Coachella, is paramount in showing the community that disabled people are the original creators of liberatory, inclusive, and accessible spaces. A Journey from Teaching to Advocacy!As my Neurodivergent friend and educator, Lydia Z. Brown states in AUTISTIC HOYA’S BRIEF ABLED PRIVILEGE CHECKLIST “Ableism is an entire way of thinking and doing that harms disabled people by treating some types of bodies and minds as valuable, worthy, and desirable, and others as undesirable and unworthy. Ableism is embedded in legal, social, and political institutions, as well as in commonly accepted and unquestioned attitudes and assumptions.”In the transformative journey from full-time teaching to passionate advocacy and activism, I, as a disabled and neurodivergent mother, artist, and designer, found myself confronting internalized ableism that sought to control and diminish my creative spirit. This manifesto serves as a powerful act of creative resistance, a form of protest, and an educational tool aimed at raising awareness within both the disabled and non-disabled communities.As a keynote speaker at the Adding Voices Conference held at Moore College of Art and Design in November 2022, I seized the opportunity to craft a solidarity tool for fellow art educators. Printed manifestos were distributed, and I had the privilege of reading each manifesto point aloud to an audience of over 300 conference attendees. The room pulsated with magic as the words resonated, fostering an environment of shared understanding and empowerment.The impact of this manifesto extended beyond the conference. A few months later, I was honored to be invited to submit the manifesto for its inaugural publication in the Slow Factory Institute Applied Utopia publication. This marked a significant milestone in amplifying the voices of disabled and neurodivergent individuals within the realms of art and education.This journey has been more than a career shift; it has been a commitment to dismantling barriers and fostering inclusivity. The manifesto stands as a beacon, guiding educators and communities toward a more empathetic and empowering future. Through creative expression, we continue to challenge and transcend the limits imposed by internalized ableism, ultimately paving the way for a more inclusive and vibrant artistic landscape.The principles raised in The Anti-Ableist Art Educators Manifesto are meant to call out and dismantle the oppression and demonization brought upon Black and Brown disabled community, specifically students that are fueled by ableism. Anti-Ableism and Collective liberation stems from the understanding that we have struggles that are all deliberately and intimately connected and that working together, through community, allows us to use the labor of love-justice to transform justice. To create more anti-ableist spaces this manifesto asks the community to collectively Show Up, Eradicate Ableism, Uplift Acceptance, Create with and Not For, Allow our Differences to Embolden us, Declare that Disability is not a Bad Word, Value all Disabled Bodies and Minds, Know that Allyship is sacrifice, and Realize that Art is connected to the survival of Black and Brown Disabled communities. Prisons Campaign at Legal Rights CenterFrom July 2023 to Sept 2023, I was one of ten featured artists to design a billboard for The End Youth Prisons Campaign at Legal Rights Center, to co-curate a City-wide abolitionist public art project in Minneapolis.&nbsp; The project is part of Freedom Constellations, a growing collaboration between youth activists and artists imagining a world where all youth are free and youth prisons no longer exist.&nbsp;All artists received photos, poetry, writing, and notes for art direction by youth leaders to inspire their billboard designs.Alongside the billboards, artists worked with youth organizers to create cultural organizing projects, bringing an immersive exhibition featuring almost 10 years of working with youth directly impacted by incarceration called #NoKidsInPrison to Minneapolis. Billboard reads: In Our Free Future You Are Blossoming, Here is a detailed description of the billboard: A horizontal billboard stands outdoors against a partly cloudy, bright sky, overlooking a dense urban cityscape with modern buildings. The billboard is sponsored by Clear Channel and has a prominent brown-orange frame. disabled and non/disabled families and communities to engage in conversations about acceptance, starting with how Disabled/Neurodivergent children are treated, valued and seen. When my son was diagnosed as Autistic at the age of three, I felt it important to begin redefining my role as a mother of a disabled child exploring how my art and design practice could inform a framework for community engagement advocating for Autistic communities, breaking the visual cycle of unjust stigmas within social and clinical practices in the process. Living with undiagnosed ADHD, I felt led to release an disability advocacy photo zine In October 2018, entitled "KnoxRoxs" dedicated to my Autistic son, as a way to amplify #AutisticJoy giving visibility to children of color in Neurodiverse communities. Since its release, the zine has received national and international recognition, including features on AfroPunk, Today at Apple, and among design presentations within disability communities at Nike, Converse and Amazon and countless book fairs around the world! It is permanently archived in Libraries at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. This zine is by no means a clinical journal or a ‘how to guide’ when it comes to parenting an autistic child. It’s a simple artistic expression examining the light and love a child can bring if you sit, look, and listen!&nbsp; It’s important take back our own narratives and tell stories for us and by us! <img
