Calling All Radical Resters x Everpress

#RestIsResistance and #RadicalPermission doodles have manifested into a new design! Recently I’ve transitioned from the grind of full-time teaching, and my career has taken a shift - as I’ve begun prioritizing advocacy and activism work. As a disabled and neurodivergent mother, artist, and designer, internalized ableism occasionally creeps in wanting to control and degrade my creativity. I continue to deal with the perpetual burnout from my previous professional experiences.
This “Calling all Radical Resters” design is inspired by my writings and sketches are taken from my entries in the “Journal of Radical Permission: A Daily Guide for Following Your Soul’s Calling” by Adrienne Maree Brown and Sonya Renee Taylor, as well as “Rest As Resistance: A Manifesto” by Tricia Hersey, creator of The Nap Ministry.
Collective liberation stems from the understanding that we have struggles that are all deliberately and intimately connected, and that working together, through community, allows us to use the labor of love-justice to transform our circumstances. Rest is the result of justice against the idea that our worth is tied to what we can produce and what we can contribute to an economic bottom line. It is the declaration against fear, tempered with collective care, in the fight against oppressive dynamics. And because of that - it is radical.
The eye represents the viewer being seen by the designer. There is solidarity created as the viewer feels seen and heard through the design. The eye also isn’t entirely open, showing that even in rest we can resist, and through our imaginations, we can dream radical dreams.
I fell asleep while designing this because sleep is my happy place and designing in bed is where my brain and body manifest the best ideas. When sketching and researching this design, I aimed to find images of some of my fav radical artists holding space for radical rest.
If you’re a radical rester, make sure to check out my limited edition snuggly hoodie and A3 print! I had so much fun making these for my @everpresshq shop!
