Bio:
Jennifer White-Johnson, Multidisciplinary Artist, Art Activist, and Assistant Professor of Visual Communications and Digital Media Arts at Bowie State University.
By analyzing how social design is defined through the HBCU experience, and the experiences as minority citizens, she looks to confront how designs can be used in the context of activism - as opposed to the commercialism this generation is exposed to so frequently. She encourages her students to reclaim their cultural identities and secure
black futures by developing their own spaces.
Both her personal and academic work explores pedagogical approaches for implementing social justice practice in the curriculum. Additionally, she seeks contributions to that curriculum that cultivate diversity, inclusion, and equity while exemplifying student and community engagement beyond traditional historical practices.
Her photography and design work has been featured in numerous print, online publications and creative collaborative projects, including Print Magazine, The
Washington Post, Maryland State Education Association and the 2019 Women’s March on Washington, and in two grammy nominated visual art designs. In October 2018 she released an advocacy photo zine entitled "KnoxRoxs" dedicated to her autistic son, as a way to give visibility to children of color in the autism community. Since its release, the zine has received national and international
recognition by being included in various Art Book fairs in Milano, London, and Madrid.
Literary features in AfroPunk, The 2019 Women’s March on Washington, The Autism Society of Baltimore, and is permanently archived in the The Metropolitan Museum of
Art and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC
